How to create a new Project in JIRA

This article shows how to create a new Project in JIRA and map an email address to it

Note:

  • Only users with JIRA Admin privileges will be able to execute the below steps

  • You must execute these steps in JIRA UAT before replicating on JIRA Prod

  • JIRA UAT URL: https://jira-uat.savethechildren.net/

  • You must request IT Support to create a Service Account to receive emails. The account must be setup before executing the below steps

In this example a JIRA Servicedesk project will be created. It will be mapped onto an email address so that messages sent to the email address will show up in the JIRA project. 

 


Creating a new Project in JIRA

 

  1. Log into JIRA

  2. Click on the settings icon, then click on Projects

  3. Click Create Project 

 

4. Select the type of project that you wish to create. In this example we will select IT Service Desk. Then click on NEXT

 

5. Enter the details for the project then click on Submit

 

6. The new project will be successfully created

 

 

We will now map an email address to the project. In this example the email Jira.Test@savethechildren.org will be used. 

 


 

Map an email to a project 

 

  1. Log into JIRA

  2. Click on the settings icon, then click on System

 

3. Under the MAIL title (left-hand side), click on Configure JEMH

 

4. Click on Profiles

 

5. Click on Create Profile 

 

6. Complete the top 3 boxes in the Basic Profile Details section - make sure to select PRODUCTION within the Readiness box. Then click on Create Profile 

 

7. A new profile will be generated using a unique ID. Make a note of this

 

 

8. Click on Configure 

 

 

9. Click on Notifications and change Forward Users to jiraerrors@savethechildren.org

 

10. Click on Project Mappings

 

11. Click on DEFAULT to expand the menu

 

12. Click on the edit pencil icon

 

13. Select the project that you created which you want to map onto the email. In this example project Handover is selected. 

 

14. Click on Save

15. Click on Issue, select the default Issue Type from the Issue Type dropdown. In this example Incident is the default one

 

 

16. Click on Save

17. Click on the settings icon, then click on System

 

18. Click on Incoming Mail

 

19. Click on Add POP / IMAP mail server 

 

20.  Fill out as following keeping the same information for the items in red box. Click on Test Connection. You will receive a 'connection was successful' message. If this works click on Add. If this does not work re-check the fields including username and password and re-try. 

USERNAME = THE EMAIL ADDRESS OF THE NEW PROJECT

21. On the Authentication Method select "Jira Prod OAuth - Microsoft - OAuth 2.0". Then click "Authorize"

 

22. Once you click Authorize, it will perform the authorization and direct you to Microsoft login. Enter the Username and Password

USERNAME = THE EMAIL ADDRESS OF THE NEW PROJECT

PASSWORD= IS THE PASSWORD FOR THE EMAIL ADDRESS

 

23. Once login done, you will see authorization completed. Click on "Test Connection" to allow the setting to test and once the test is successful the Save button will be no longer in grayed and allow you to save the settings.

 

 

24. Click on Add incoming mail handler 

 

25. Type the name and select the project from the Server dropdown the incoming mail should be mapped to. Then click on Next

 

 

26. Select the JEMH profile that was created with the unique ID (in this example - 66Handover), then click on Submit

 

27. Click on Save at the bottom of the page

 

28. Send an email to the service account (e.g. Jira.Test@savethechildren.org)

 

29. The test email will show up in the newly created project
